Just before the EU Interior Ministers are scheduled to consult on the migration crisis in Ceuta, the European Union has demanded improved border security from the Spanish government. Alexander Throm, the parliamentary group spokesperson for the Union faction in the Bundestag, stated to the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday) that this situation will not be the final “stress test” for the Union’s external borders and European asylum system, adding that Spain is “obviously a weak link.”
Throm emphasized that the “inaction or overburdening” by Spain must not negatively impact other EU member states. He insisted that if Spain is unable to adequately control its external borders, the Spanish government must request assistance from Frontex.
The CDU interior politician further demanded that the Spanish government be compelled “under all circumstances” to reinforce its external border security and consistently apply the new GEAS rules.
