Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Green faction, has publicly called on Friedrich Merz of the CDU to improve the management of the search for a successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Speaking to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, Dröge criticized Merz’s performance in personnel matters, stating that he has shown no particular aptitude, both when staffing his own cabinet and during other significant institutional appointments, such as those to the Federal Constitutional Court. Dröge expects Merz to handle the upcoming election for the Federal President “more seriously,” urging him to recognize current political trends and advocate for a woman in the role.
