In response to SPD leader Lars Klingbeil’s call for a serious investigation into a potential ban on the AfD party, The Left views the Social Democrats as having a clear responsibility. Clara Bünger, the Deputy Chair of The Left parliamentary group, told the “Rheinische Post” that the SPD, which is part of the federal government, is in a position to initiate concrete steps. According to Bünger, Klingbeil could start a federal-state working group even today to outline these measures. She admitted to being “frankly shocked” that the federal government has not acted decisively against the AfD, despite the party’s “increasing radicalization and attacks on democracy.” Nevertheless, she welcomed the Vice Chancellor’s acknowledgment that action against the AfD must be taken.
Bünger further stated that banning the AfD could be a “key component.” In her view, the necessary legal requirements are already in place for such a move. However, she cautioned that a ban alone would not be enough to marginalize the AfD. To push the party back permanently, politicians must demonstrate to the public that politics actually improves people’s lives and takes their interests seriously. This aligns with Klingbeil’s position, who writes in a guest column for “Die Zeit” that the constitutional authorities are obligated to assess a ban process following a legal opinion on the AfD’s standing.
