Merkel Successor Dares Pride Controversy

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will not be attending this year’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations in Berlin at the end of July.

Responding to inquiries from the dts news agency regarding a potential invitation from the Lesbians and Gays in the Union (LSU) association, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius stated on Monday that the Chancellor had prior commitments on that day.

When pressed about the Chancellor’s stance on the ongoing debate surrounding the display of rainbow flags at the Bundestag, Kornelius offered a more measured response. He acknowledged the significance of CSD as a platform highlighting the rights and societal recognition for LGBTQ+ individuals. He affirmed that the Federal Government unequivocally supports these objectives, a position clearly articulated within the current coalition agreement.
