A broad coalition of various organizations presented a five-point plan aimed at providing acute protection and prevention against the consequences of the climate crisis. The group delivered their plans on Thursday during a press conference held directly in front of the federal chancellery.
This alliance, which is made up of groups focused on climate protection, social welfare, agriculture, tenant rights, “blue light” services, as well as unions and churches, sharply criticized the federal government for its inaction despite the dramatic fallout from the ongoing climate crisis. They called on Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to convene a “heat summit” and ensure that the activities of federal, state, and municipal authorities are strategically coordinated.
Furthermore, the organizations’ plan calls for the development of a national heat protection strategy, the formal inclusion of climate action as a mandated community task within Germany’s Basic Law, and the guarantee of funding for both climate protection and climate adaptation. They also stressed the urgent need to begin moving away from fossil fuels. The groups concluded by stating that the federal government must assume responsibility and mobilize every possible resource to decelerate the climate crisis and safeguard both the population and the economy. Among the organizations participating are Arbeiterwohlfahrt, the German Confederation of Nature and Environment Protection (BUND), Fridays for Future, and Greenpeace Germany.
