Füllkrug Returns to Werder Bremen on Loan to Strengthen Offense

Niclas Füllkrug is returning to Werder Bremen on a one-year loan deal from West Ham United. The 33-year-old striker is expected to bolster the attacking lineup of the Green and Whites, as the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday.

Peter Niemeyer, the Head of Professional Football at SVW, stated that Füllkrug has shown a clear commitment to the club and is a crucial short-term boost for Werder. Although Niemeyer acknowledged that the last couple of years haven’t gone exactly as Füllkrug had hoped, he expressed confidence that the striker will successfully continue his career at the club.

Head coach Daniel Thioune also welcomed the signing, describing Füllkrug as a classic goalscorer. Thioune highlighted his physical strength, proficiency in heading the ball, and technical skill. Furthermore, the coach noted that Füllkrug is a strong leader who requires no acclimatization period, given that he knows many players and staff from his previous time at Werder.

Füllkrug originally came through the Werder youth academy and made his professional debut in Bremen. His career progressed through stints at Fürth, Nürnberg, and Hannover before he rejoined the Green and Whites in 2019. He later moved to Borussia Dortmund three years ago, subsequently joining West Ham United, and most recently, made a loan move to AC Milan last January.

Having represented his country in both the World Cup and the Euros, the forward has scored 14 goals in 24 international matches. In total, Füllkrug has played 157 games in the Bundesliga (56 goals), and has 135 appearances and 47 goals recorded in the second division.
