Following the attempted drone strike on the Leipzig airport, Robin Wagener, the Greens’ East Europe Spokesperson in the Bundestag, is demanding unequivocal consequences from the federal government. Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group, Wagener stated that while closing the Russian House is not enough, it is an overdue and necessary first step.
He added that if it is confirmed that Russia was behind the attack, there must be noticeable repercussions. The Greens’ East Europe Spokesperson further noted that Putin’s recklessness directly endangers the safety of people in Germany. Wagener called on the federal government to implement three specific measures against Russia: supporting Ukraine using frozen Russian state assets, tackling the Russian shadow fleet, and supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles. These actions, he asserted, would be understood in the Kremlin.
Wagener criticized the government’s approach, pointing out that “Federal Chancellor Merz consistently draws attention with strong statements, but these are rarely followed by concrete actions. What we need is not grandiosity, but resolve and a willingness to act.” According to the Green politician, the closure of the Russian House is not merely a reaction to the Leipzig drone attack, but a necessary application of European sanctions following the Russian war of aggression. He argued that Germany has already wasted too much credibility in its foreign policy.
Wagener stressed that military attacks on German territory absolutely cannot be accepted. Therefore, the federal government must finally act: unlocking frozen Russian state funds to aid Ukraine, effectively constraining the Russian shadow fleet, and making Taurus missiles available to Ukraine. He concluded that in addition to the overdue closing of the Russian House, these three concrete measures would allow Germany to demonstrate that its strong words are backed by decisive action-actions that the Kremlin would certainly recognize.
