The Green party in the Bundestag supports the demand made by North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) for a federal-state working group dedicated to the constitutional handling of the AfD party.
Marcel Emmerich, the Greens’ domestic policy spokesperson, told the Handelsblatt that, “The AfD is playing a dangerous game with our democracy. But our democracy is not an experimental lab for right-wing extremists.” He agreed that Wüst is justified in calling for concrete steps to examine a possible ban procedure for the AfD.
Emmerich emphasized that any such process must be prepared meticulously, ensuring it is legally sound and based on solid evidence. Therefore, he called for a clear timetable, a joint review process involving both the Federation and the individual states, and specific forward instructions. He stressed that it is high time that action was taken, noting that the possibility of the Federal Constitutional Court reviewing a party’s unconstitutionality is a crucial tool for defensive democracy.
A key point fueling this debate is the question of how the AfD’s participation in the future state government in Saxony-Anhalt might impact the security structure of German federalism.
