CDU leader Friedrich Merz has shortly canceled a planned phone call with US President Donald Trump that was originally scheduled for Wednesday. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius announced in Berlin on Wednesday that the appointment had been postponed by the German side.
As of yet, a new date for the conversation has not been set. According to Kornelius, the phone call was scheduled in the context of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Chancellor’s message was intended to reinforce that Germany remains ready today to stand with the United States “for the values that define and unite us.”
Kornelius did not provide any reason for the cancellation. When questioned about whether the decision was related to Trump’s social media post regarding the AfD’s electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, the government spokesman simply stated that he had nothing further to add regarding the Chancellor’s calendar.
