The Green Party stated that it will only request a ban procedure against the AfD in the Bundestag if they secure a safe parliamentary majority. According to Fraktionschefin Katharina Dröge, this is the prerequisite.
Dröge welcomed the proposal made by the North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President, Hendrik Wüst, for a federal working group to review the situation. She told RTL and ntv that “we have always told the Union that if this is the first step you need to take to move forward, then we will do it.” She suggested that the Union should reassess its approach.
However, Dröge disagreed with the counterargument that initiating a ban procedure is merely an attempt to disqualify an increasingly strong political opponent. She asserted that the Basic Law (Grundgesetz) provides this necessary safeguard. She described the AfD as far-right and committed to destroying democracy: “As soon as they have the opportunity to do so, they will do it. And they must not be given that chance.”
The Green politician believes that the timing for such a procedure is appropriate. She stressed the urgency, noting, “It is almost too late, and because of that, it is critically important to act now.” Dröge concluded by warning that should far-right and right-populist groups gain power, protecting democracy would become significantly more difficult subsequently, highlighting the need to prevent this outcome beforehand.
