Following a series of nationwide attacks on substations, several federal states are significantly increasing the monitoring of critical infrastructure. This information, reported by “Spiegel” after an inquiry to the 16 interior ministries and state authorities, shows intensified security measures across various regions.
The Saxon Ministry of the Interior stated that security agencies have reinforced their protective measures after the initial sabotage incidents in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia. Similarly, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reported that police and grid operators have sharpened and focused their observational efforts in light of these events, including dedicating specific points within the network to extra surveillance during patrol routes. Schleswig-Holstein has also heightened its patrol activity at crucial points of the critical infrastructure.
In Hesse, the Interior Ministry noted an increased number of tips and simultaneously emphasized the legal obligation of operators to ensure the physical protection of vital facilities. The ministries did not specify exactly which objects are being protected. In connection with the sabotage series, police arrested a 48-year-old suspect near the Weisweiler power plant in North Rhine-Westphalia on Tuesday.
