Given the continued rise in fuel prices, Saarland Minister-President Anke Rehlinger (SPD) is strongly supporting the call for a cap on gasoline prices. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Rehlinger stated that German drivers are currently paying a price exacerbated by factors such as Trump’s activities regarding Iran and the aggression of the Houthis, emphasizing that the increasing costs of petrol and gas require a political solution from the federal government.
Addressing Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (CDU), the SPD politician pressed for action, demanding that Reiche ensure the Cartel Office operates effectively. To counteract rising prices, Rehlinger suggested implementing a price ceiling modeled after Luxembourg. Furthermore, she called for taxing the windfall profits made by oil corporations. According to the Minister-President, this tax would create the necessary financial capacity to fund relief measures for consumers.
