Reiner Holznagel, president of the Taxpayer’s Association, has criticized the relief measures concerning petrol prices planned by the Federal Government. Speaking to the Rheinische Post, Holznagel stressed that the nation requires targeted and permanently effective relief, rather than expensive, short-term fixes whose impact on ordinary citizens remains uncertain.
He pointed out that previous tax reductions demonstrated that not every measure implemented at the pump automatically or completely benefits the driver. Therefore, Holznagel suggested that increasing the distance allowance would be a superior approach, as it specifically assists those who genuinely commute to work.
Furthermore, Holznagel called for greater market competition and stronger antitrust regulation. He argued that high diesel prices do not only affect car drivers; ultimately, they result in increased costs for both goods and services across the economy.
