More than 200 German professors have called for the establishment of a “Global Inequality Council” within the United Nations. The scientists issued an open letter to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), which was cited by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
This initiative aligns with a push led by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, the former chief economist of the World Bank, who has been campaigning for this issue during the UN General Assembly in New York. Stiglitz has diagnosed the current situation as a global “crisis of inequality,” a condition he believes severely threatens democratic systems.
The signatories of the letter advocate for increased, coordinated international research to provide factual foundations for effective political action. The concept for the proposed Inequality Council mirrors that of the World Climate Council. This initiative already has official support from countries such as Brazil, Norway, and South Africa.
