The Left Party has filed a case against Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) with the Federal Constitutional Court over remarks she made. This legal petition was filed by the Cologne media law firm Prigge and has been reported by newspapers associated with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.” Prior to this action, Reiche had failed to meet the deadline to submit a cease-and-desist declaration.
The dispute centers on a post Reiche shared on the ministry’s official Instagram account, which included excerpts from a speech and the quote: “Antisemitism and expropriation endanger Germany and the economy.” The Left Party’s legal team argues that this statement violates the right to equal participation in political competition. They are seeking an urgent court injunction to compel Reiche to remove the post from the ministry’s official account.
The Minister’s comments come after she had reaffirmed her worries before traveling to Ukraine, expressing fears that a government led by the Left Party in Berlin could lead to nationwide declines in growth. In an interview with the “Bild am Sonntag”, Reiche stated that the representation of the Left in Berlin is not only dangerous for the city but for the nation as a whole, flagging it as a threat to Germany’s status as an investment and economic hub.
The Berlin Left views these events as part of a “large-scale campaign” orchestrated by the CDU against their mayoral candidate and winner, Elif Eralp. Furthermore, the party has initiated lawsuits targeting the CDU interior ministries in several German states-Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Hessen, Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein-over analogous statements made on official ministry channels.
