Bärbel Bas announced through a personal statement on Monday that she is stepping down from two roles: her position as SPD Chairwoman and her appointment as Federal Minister for Labor.
Bas stated that since the passing of her stepdaughter, she requires time to process her grief. Furthermore, she noted that during this personally difficult period, the public attacks against her-which she stated even originated from within her own coalition partner-have been intensified. Because she currently lacks the strength to dedicate herself fully to her government and party work in the short term, she has decided to resign from both positions.
She announced that her tenure as Party Chair concludes today. Separately, she has asked the Chancellor to relieve her of her post as Federal Minister for Labor and Social Affairs.
The departing minister added that while this was not an easy decision, she believes the Ministry’s staff now deserves strong leadership capable of pushing forward the pending laws and reform projects with full vigor.
