CDU leader Friedrich Merz announced that he intends to quickly advance the change in leadership for the Federal Ministry of Labor. Speaking after the CDU leadership meeting at the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, Merz said he will propose the appointment of Alexander Schweitzer to the Federal President this coming Monday. The former Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate will take on significant responsibilities, Merz noted. He believes Schweitzer will handle outstanding legislative projects, hoping these can be quickly adopted by the cabinet and introduced into the parliamentary process. Merz expressed confidence that, given Schweitzer’s governmental experience from Rhineland-Palatinate, fruitful cooperation with the federal government will be possible. This selection follows Bärbel Bas’s sudden announcement of her resignation as the current Minister of Labor and former head of the SPD. Bas cited personal reasons for her decision but also referenced public attacks from colleagues in the coalition partner’s ranks. She stated that she currently does not have the capacity to fully dedicate herself to her governmental and party roles in the short term, leading her to step down from both positions. Merz concluded by thanking Bas for her service.
