Seeheimer Kreis Demands Unity, Warns SPD Against Internal Feuds Amid Policy Battles

Following Bärbel Bas’s withdrawal from SPD leadership, Esra Limbacher, the Deputy Group Leader and representative for Seeheim, is urging for party unity and a renewed concentration on political substance. Speaking on the “Welt” news channel regarding the future of the party’s leadership, Limbacher backed party leader Lars Klingbeil and a Seeheim member, explicitly resisting further discussions about new leadership. He asserted that a decision has been made, stressing that stability is paramount now, noting that the public is currently more concerned with the direction of the country than with who occupies the party’s top position.

Limbacher addressed the debate surrounding the future of the state’s retirement system for those with 45 years of contributions, indicating a willingness to amend the rules but drawing a firm line. He insisted that individuals who relied on the existing framework must continue to have access to that benefit. While some changes are inevitable, he affirmed that this should not deter the push for reforms in Parliament. He stated that elected officials are confident enough to continue pushing these changes through, but warned that they must not create new injustices. Despite this, Limbacher voiced a desire for the federal government to accelerate key structural reforms, stating frankly that he would welcome a significantly faster pace in the passage of many pieces of legislation.

Furthermore, while discussing a potential decrease in electricity tax for consumers, the SPD politician issued a caution against making unbacked commitments. He stressed the principle that any money spent must be generated somehow, adding, “One should not make false promises right now because, ultimately, the budget must remain sustainable and the figures must be accurate.”
