Juso leader Philipp Türmer believes that the upcoming SPD party conference offers a crucial opportunity to revitalize the party by introducing new top leadership. He suggested that a step back or resignation from Co-Party Chair Lars Klingbeil is a possibility. Türmer commented to the newspapers of “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the announcement of the party conference has finally provided the necessary foundation to have extensive discussions with the party membership about the SPD’s future.
The Juso leader emphasized that the party requires “a plan and ideas for the future-and leaders who credibly stand for those ideas.” Türmer also stated that Klingbeil’s indication that a comprehensive personnel overhaul must occur following the departure of Co-Chair Bärbel Bas is worthy of praise, adding that it is good that these issues are being openly discussed.
As for the official plans, Klingbeil confirmed that the SPD intends to elect its entire party leadership at a conference scheduled for either December or January. However, he kept his own potential re-nomination as party leader open.
The internal discussions surrounding leadership have intensified due to the SPD’s lagging poll numbers and poor election results. Critics, including the Jusos, had previously pointed out that Klingbeil and Bas held ministerial responsibilities in addition to their party leadership roles.
