Wadephul Calls for Intensified Pressure on Russia Amid Escalating War in Ukraine

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) argued for greater pressure on Russia on Tuesday, just prior to departing for a security conference in Warsaw. He stated that Ukraine requires support more urgently than ever, pointing out that the Russian regime is heavily committed to escalation through massive aerial attacks.

He highlighted the severe humanitarian cost of the conflict, noting that Putin’s “rocket terror” alone claimed the lives of over 150 innocent people and injured many more in the past week. Wadephul emphasized that these victims were simply people who sought to live in freedom and peace. He added that Putin’s actions constantly remind Europeans that freedom and security in the continent are no longer guaranteed. While he acknowledged that European defense begins in Ukraine, he insisted that the conflict does not end there, adding, “We are also in the crosshairs.”

Wadephul emphasized that now is the time to escalate pressure on Russia rather than letting one’s guard down. He confirmed that, in collaboration with EU partners, the Union introduced the most extensive sanctions in its history the day before. These measures target companies and individuals deemed critical to Russia’s war efforts, including manufacturers of drones and ballistic missiles, as well as their board members.

According to the minister, these actions demonstrate clearly to Putin that his attempts to sow division or uncertainty in Europe will fail. He concluded by stating that, along with his European colleagues, they are sending a clear signal from Warsaw to Moscow: Europe is capable of decisive action and stands united in support of Ukraine.
