Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has rejected recent allegations made by the SPD regarding the way retired Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD) was treated.
At a Union parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday, Merz firmly denied the attacks, according to the “Rheinische Post”. He stated that he would not accept “unfounded claims” from his coalition partner; however, according to attendees, he did not provide specific details.
The strong accusations stem from Manuela Schwesig (SPD), the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who had previously leveled serious criticism against the Union. Schwesig described the handling of Bas-who took early retirement following the death of her stepdaughter-as “inhuman.”
At the same time, Merz simultaneously used the parliamentary session to accelerate discussions surrounding upcoming reforms. The Chancellor allegedly stated, “I will not accept delays.”
