The Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation, Reem Alabali Radovan (SPD), has criticized how the departing Federal Minister of Labor, Bärbel Bas (SPD), was treated. Speaking to the news magazine Politico, Alabali Radovan noted, “I am currently worried about how we actually treat each other in this political climate. It is inhuman and unbearable that, despite a personal bereavement, she was attacked so harshly. We all need to do something to get out of this poisoned atmosphere.”
Bas announced her withdrawal from her ministerial post and her party chairmanship on Monday morning, citing the death of her stepdaughter.
The Development Minister praised Bas’s commitment to her work. “I also have the highest respect for her decision. Despite a lot of resistance, she always demonstrated her convictions and fought for social justice. And that will remain,” Alabali Radovan stated. She added that the news had affected her deeply.
When asked whether Bas’s resignation would slow down the current course of reform, Alabali Radovan clarified that the Ministry of Labor has been addressing reforms for months and will continue to do so.
