Pope Leo XIV underwent a successful lung operation on Tuesday at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome. According to the Holy See press office, the operation was completed successfully, within the expected timeframe, and as planned, and the Holy Father has returned to his room.
The Pope had previously announced that he would be undergoing the procedure soon. Addressing the public on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, he explained that doctors had recently detected a limited nodule in his lung during some checks. He confirmed that the nodule was discovered at a very early stage and was well-localized. Following the medical advice, he decided to proceed with the surgery to have it removed.
Leo XIV has served as the Bishop of Rome since May 8, 2025. As the Pope, he heads the Catholic Church and serves as the head of state for Vatican City. He was elected Pope in the fourth round of voting following the death of Pope Francis in April 2025.
