SPD foreign policy expert and former faction chair Rolf Mützenich heavily criticized a proposal submitted by the AfD and BSW in Saxony-Anhalt advocating for the removal of economic sanctions against Russia. Mützenich described the actions of the AfD and BSW as “shameless,” asserting that they are tricking people into believing simple solutions exist for a highly complex issue.
According to Mützenich, following this proposal could lead to a disastrous outcome. He stressed that Ukraine requires German support in the fight against the aggressive Russian regime, calling it a fundamental obligation under international law to assist a nation under attack, which is explicitly covered by the UN Charter.
He dismissed claims made by the AfD suggesting that lifting sanctions would result in lower fuel prices in Germany as “nonsense.” Mützenich explained that gas prices would not become cheaper, at least not sustainably. Furthermore, he highlighted that Russia is repositioning its energy infrastructure toward Asia and cautioned that funding Russia’s military campaigns is counterproductive. He added that to ensure favorable long-term energy supplies, the focus must be on renewable energies and alternative modes of transport.
The AfD and BSW had previously passed a motion in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament demanding the immediate lifting of economic sanctions against Russia. Their proposal also called for the cessation of financial aid to Ukraine, except for humanitarian assistance, and the suspension of weapon deliveries to the country.
