Deutsche Bank Sees Opportunity in Unicredit’s Potential Commerzbank Takeover

Deutsche Bank intends to capitalize on the planned acquisition of its competitor, Commerzbank, by the Italian banking giant UniCredit. Declaring that the planned acquisition represents an opportunity, Deutsche Bank executive Alexander von zur Mühlen stated this during the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Bangkok.

Von zur Mühlen explained that because the German economy is globally integrated, it requires a worldwide platform for its banking relationships. He added that when a competitor exits specific sectors, Deutsche Bank’s role and its growth potential naturally increase.

Separately, the European Central Bank (ECB) had recently approved UniCredit’s unlimited increase in its stake in Commerzbank. UniCredit currently holds just under 30% of Commerzbank shares, and it offered to acquire an additional nearly 20%. However, UniCredit still requires approval from various regulatory authorities to fully complete this takeover. The ECB’s blessing was considered the most crucial hurdle.

UniCredit has previously signalled its intent to reduce Commerzbank’s international operations. This could prompt corporate clients to seek alternative partners for their global trade needs, a dynamic that Deutsche Bank is prepared to exploit. Von zur Mühlen noted, “We already have very close relationships with many of these clients, but there is still room to grow.” He emphasized that the bank sees this as a significant opportunity both in Germany and in its overseas business. As Germany’s largest international bank, Deutsche Bank aims to become the primary resource for the affected corporate clients.
