German Minister Pledges Support for Local Democracy Projects Amid Political Challenges

Federal Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has signaled support for local democracy projects, particularly in Eastern Germany, following the electoral success of the AfD party in the region. Prien stated that those who commit themselves locally to human dignity and societal cohesion deserve backing and “reliable perspectives,” especially as their engagement faces increasing pressure, according to the minister told the “Rheinische Post”. She emphasized that people who dedicate their time daily to fostering mutual respect should not be left unsupported. Prien further explained that the government is striving to create “good solutions” to ensure the continuation and further support of these crucial projects and advisory services. The local partnerships for democracy and the state democracy centers will remain central elements within the evolving federal program “Democracy Lives.” She concluded by adding that applications for the 2027 funding year are already open. Their objective, she said, is to continue strengthening local civil society and ensuring that people who are dedicated to our democratic values receive reliable backing in the future.
