Left Party Surges Greens Face Shock Challenge

A recent opinion poll indicates a notable shift in German voter preferences, with the Left Party (Die Linke) gaining considerable ground and now matching the Green Party in popularity. According to a new trend published by the Institute for Opinion Research (Insa) and reported by “Bild”, the Left Party currently polls at 11 percent. This represents an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the previous week.

Conversely, the Green Party has seen a slight decline, dropping 0.5 percentage points to also stand at 11 percent.

The survey, conducted between July 4th and 7th, polled a representative sample of 2,007 citizens.

The Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) remains stable at 28 percent, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is consistently registered at 23.5 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has experienced a decrease, losing one percentage point to reach 14.5 percent.

According to Hermann Binkert, head of Insa, the current coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD is trailing behind their performance in the previous federal election. “The Left and the Greens are currently only 3.5 percentage points behind the SPD” Binkert stated to “Bild”. He further suggested that both parties possess a potential for significantly exceeding 20 percent and could challenge the SPD’s position as the third-largest party in parliament. The SPD, he notes, has yet to tap into its potential for growth, which the poll suggests could reach 24 percentage points.
