Baden-Württemberg’s Minister-President, Cem Özdemir (Greens), has openly expressed openness to imposing sanctions against state governments that are perceived to be shaking the foundations of the rule of law. Speaking to the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”, the Green politician stated that they must scrutinize closely any state government that crosses the boundaries of the rule of law or questions the fundamental principles of the free democratic basic order. He insisted that it is only consistent to examine all possibilities for sanctioning such cases, noting, “We will look closely at the proposal from Bavaria.” Özdemir emphasized that his judgment in this matter is not dependent on the geographical location of the state or the political party in power; “Our compass is the Basic Law.” This stance follows a proposal put forth by the Minister-Presidents of Bavaria, Markus Söder (CSU), and Hesse, Boris Rhein (CDU). They have advocated for what they term an “extremism clause,” which would allow for the potential cutting of funds from the state financial equalization fund for governments in Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin led by the AfD or the Linkspartei.
