CDU and SPD Warn of Extremist Infiltration of Youth Protests Amid Safety Concerns

Following a contentious weekend across several European countries, politicians from the Union and the SPD are issuing warnings about potential violent disruptions and the infiltration of extremist forces within Germany.

Alexander Throm, the Union faction’s spokesman on domestic affairs, told the “Rheinische Post” that the “danger” of planned peaceful youth protests being co-opted in Germany by “left-extremist forces, parts of the migrant milieu, and criminals” must be taken very seriously. He noted that calls circulating on social media, even if currently minor, are “cause for concern.” While emphasizing that young people should be able to protest peacefully to advocate for their demands, such as better education and generational justice, Throm stressed that crossing the “limit” by using violence, or resorting to attacks on police officers or public facilities, is intolerable.

Meanwhile, Sebastian Fiedler, the SPD faction’s domestic affairs spokesman, firmly stated that there is no justification for “violent protests,” “at any time and in no location.” He expressed his satisfaction that he believes the security authorities adopted a “highly professional and early” stance regarding potential demonstrations and have analyzed the situation. Fiedler further elaborated that this analysis includes closely examining those individuals who are “heating up the situation in the digital space.”
