Amid the political struggle regarding the succession of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, pressure is mounting on CDU Chancellor and party chief Friedrich Merz.
Stephan Toscani, the CDU party head of Saarland and one of the top candidates for next year’s state elections, told the “Rheinische Post” that he anticipates party leadership will reach a decision in the coming days, thus concluding the public debate surrounding the high office. Toscani asserted that the time for such a resolution has arrived. He added that he is confident that the CDU and CSU, in cooperation with the SPD, will manage to put forward “a compelling proposal.”
The new head of state is scheduled to be elected on January 30th. The CSU has nominated Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner. However, the CDU has yet to announce its choice. During a recent CSU party conference on Saturday, Chancellor Merz remained silent when questioned about this specific personnel matter.
