CDU Politician Wins VP Seat in Berlin Legislature, Defeating AfD Candidate

CDU politician Cornelia Seibeld has been elected Vice President of the Berlin House of Representatives. She secured 109 votes during the constitutive session held on Thursday. The vote saw 33 representatives vote ‘no,’ six abstentions, and one invalid vote. Seibeld previously served as the President of the House of Representatives from 2023 to 2026.

Conversely, Martin Trefzer, nominated by the AfD parliamentary group as the second Vice President, failed to win the vote. He received only 40 ‘yes’ votes, while 99 representatives voted against him, accompanied by eight abstentions and two invalid votes.

Prior to the Vice Presidential election, Hendrikje Klein, a politician from The Left party, was chosen as the new President of the Berlin House of Representatives. She won 149 votes, against 98 representatives who voted against her, and nine abstentions.

The House of Representatives now consists of 153 members, which is six fewer than in previous legislative periods. The Left party holds 45 seats. However, the group currently registers only 44 members because a selected Left politician was unable to attend the constitutive session due to illness.

The party demographics are as follows: the CDU secured 33 representatives, the AfD 29, the Greens 25, and the SPD 21. Nearly half of the deputies were newly elected to the parliament. Additionally, women currently constitute approximately 38 percent of the representatives in the House of Representatives.
