The broader S&P 500 edged slightly lower, finishing around 6,225 points, down 0.1%. In contrast, the technology-focused Nasdaq 100 registered a modest gain, reaching approximately 22,700 points, up 0.1% at the same time.
Significant volatility was observed in commodity markets. An announcement from US President Donald Trump regarding proposed tariffs of 50% on copper imports triggered a substantial price surge. The metal’s value briefly climbed by over 12%, reaching a record high. The timing for the implementation of these tariffs remains unspecified.
The euro strengthened slightly against the US dollar, trading at $1.1723, corresponding to a dollar value of €0.8530.
Gold prices saw a considerable decline. Spot prices for a fine ounce fell to $3,302, representing a decrease of 1% and a price of €90.56 per gram.
Crude oil prices, however, experienced a notable increase. A barrel of Brent North Sea crude was priced at $70.29, reflecting a rise of 71 cents, or 1.0%, compared to the close of the previous trading day.
