Gysi Slams Klingbeil: SPD Overreach Accused of Equating Die Linke With AfD

The left-wing politician Gregor Gysi accused SPD leader Lars Klingbeil of conflating Die Linke (The Left Party) with the AfD (Alternative for Germany). Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Gysi stated that Klingbeil hardly sees any difference between the two groups, specifically citing the situation in Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin as evidence.

Gysi also criticized Klingbeil’s premise, arguing that his assertion is not only misguided, as Klingbeil seems unaware of how often Die Linke has governed in federal states without causing major political ruptures. Furthermore, the Die Linke parliamentarian argued that Klingbeil is recklessly jeopardizing the SPD’s electoral strength in all regions and perpetually, merely to offer sound advice.

Previously, SPD Chairman Klingbeil had called upon the Berliner Linke to exclude politicians with antisemitic attitudes or close associations from their ranks. During the SPD economic forum, the vice chancellor stated that criticizing Saxony-Anhalt was hypocritical if Die Linke was allowed to operate without similar scrutiny in Berlin. This debate over the proper approach to tackling antisemitism has made discussions between Die Linke, the Greens, and the SPD increasingly difficult.
