Stegner Slams Merz Leadership During Presidential Nominee Selection

According to SPD politician Ralf Stegner, the manner in which the CDU’s Ilse Aigner was nominated for the Federal Presidency highlights an underlying authority problem with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Stegner told the “Rheinische Post” that “the entire process demonstrates the weakness of leadership, which is a core issue within this governing coalition.”

Despite his criticism of the political process, Stegner holds Aigner herself in high regard. He views her as an excellent choice for the state’s first Federal President, praising her for being “clever and integral, respected across party lines, and simultaneously down-to-earth.” Furthermore, he stated that in times of severe challenges to democracy from right-wing extremist parties, such qualities are invaluable.

However, Stegner maintained that the fact Chancellor and CDU chief Merz appears to be a motivated figure in the selection process-even when facilitated by Markus Söder-does not alter his negative assessment.
