Fürth Drops ‘Greuther’ Name, Returning to Traditional Identity in Club Evolution

The club, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, is set to adopt the name SpVgg Fürth starting next season. This decision was formally approved by the club members during an extraordinary general meeting held on Sunday, with 88.3 percent of the valid votes favoring the proposal.

Volker Heißmann, the President of Fürth, expressed satisfaction with the result, stating, “Our members ensured a clear outcome.” He thanked everyone who participated in the meeting, adding that the board now plans to “prepare the necessary steps to implement the name change as comprehensively as possible at the start of the season.”

However, alongside the name change, the club wishes to “adequately honor the successful era of SpVgg Greuther Fürth” until the end of the 2026/27 season. They also intend to continue keeping the contributions and history of TSV Vestenbergsgreuth, since its merger in 1996, a living part of the club’s narrative.

Heißmann acknowledged the strong emotions surrounding the name change. “We know how much this issue moves our members. For many, today’s decision is a special moment, while for others, it represents the loss of a name that held personal meaning,” he observed. He stressed that both feelings were valid and deserved respect. He concluded that the decision officially marks a new chapter for the sports club, stating that they intend to navigate this new era together-with deep respect for their history and strong faith in their common future.
