SPD Defends Top Court Nomination

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) reaffirmed its commitment to Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as its nominee for a position as judge on the Federal Constitutional Court, according to Fraktionsvize (deputy parliamentary group leader) Sonja Eichwede. Eichwede confirmed plans for a personal presentation of the candidate to the parliamentary group of the CDU/CSU, acknowledging reservations within the Union factions.

Speaking to the German TV channel “Welt” on Saturday, Eichwede emphasized the strength of Brosius-Gersdorf’s candidacy, describing her as an “outstanding scientist” well-suited for the role in Karlsruhe. She stressed the importance of a constructive dialogue, arguing that attributing individual viewpoints or positions to nominees, particularly when potentially inaccurate, is detrimental to democratic processes.

The SPD’s plan for Brosius-Gersdorf to present herself directly to the CDU/CSU parliamentary group comes despite reported reservations within the Union. Eichwede suggested that this direct engagement provides a valuable opportunity to address concerns and clarify any misunderstandings.

“When criticism is voiced, especially when it becomes personal, it is good to look each other in the eye and talk about it and to correct any errors” Eichwede stated. She expressed confidence that this meeting would allow Brosius-Gersdorf to showcase her expertise in constitutional law and dispel any remaining doubts.

While the proposal has been made, a specific date for the meeting has not yet been finalized. Eichwede described it as a difficult invitation to decline, especially given the requirement for open dialogue and the resolution of doubts within a democratic system. She indicated that the Unions faction still stands behind the proposal.
