Germany Pauses Syria Deportations Amid Renewed Conflict

Recent clashes in Syria are prompting continued caution within the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) regarding deportations to the war-torn nation.

Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD parliamentary group’s spokesperson for foreign policy, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that the situation in Syria is currently appearing increasingly unstable and remains under close observation by the German government. While acknowledging the stipulations for deportations outlined in the coalition agreement, Ahmetovic emphasized that their implementation is contingent upon conditions being met. He stated that stricter rules for deporting seriously criminal offenders to Syria must be enacted as soon as the circumstances allow.

Furthermore, Ahmetovic called for the new Syrian government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, to guarantee the safety and security of all population groups within the country. He stressed the need for the Syrian government to protect all people – irrespective of origin or religion – from violence and to finally initiate an inclusive political process. Stability is crucial, not only for the Syrian people but also for the wider region and overall peace. Germany and Europe stand ready to offer support in achieving such stability.
