Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Election: What to Expect in 2026

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in northeastern Germany, has officially set the date for its next state parliament election. The government announced the election will take place on September 20, 2026, during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the Ministry of the Interior.

The decision to finalize the date provides clarity for political parties, electoral authorities and the state’s citizenry well in advance. Interior Minister Christian Pegel, of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasized the government’s intention to facilitate a well-organized and transparent preparation for the upcoming election.

The timing of the election adheres to stipulations outlined in the state constitution and the State and Municipal Elections Act. These regulations mandate that the state parliament must be re-elected within a timeframe of 58 to 61 months following the commencement of the current parliamentary term, which began on October 26, 2021.
