German retailers experienced a positive shift in sales performance during June 2025, according to preliminary data released by the Statistical Federal Office (Destatis). After a downward revision of previous figures, retail turnover exhibited a calendar- and seasonally-adjusted real increase of 1.0 percent compared to May 2025 and a nominal rise of 0.8 percent.
Looking back further, the increase represents a significant improvement over the year-on-year performance, where real turnover rose by 4.9 percent and nominal turnover increased by 5.8 percent.
May 2025 previously showed a preliminary drop in retail sales. However, revised data indicate a real decrease of 0.6 percent (previously -1.6 percent) and a nominal decrease of 0.1 percent (previously -1.2 percent) compared to April.
Food retailers saw a modest increase in turnover during June, with both real and nominal figures rising by 0.3 percent compared to the prior month. Year-on-year, the food retail segment registered a real increase of 0.9 percent and a nominal increase of 3.3 percent.
Non-food retailers demonstrated stronger growth, with calendar- and seasonally-adjusted real turnover rising by 1.8 percent and nominal turnover by 1.4 percent in June compared to May. Year-over-year, non-food retail experienced a substantial real increase of 7.4 percent and a nominal increase of 7.7 percent.
The online and mail-order sector continued to thrive, achieving a real turnover increase of 9.0 percent and a nominal increase of 8.5 percent during June. Compared to June 2024, online retail sales witnessed a considerable real increase of 20.4 percent and a nominal increase of 19.9 percent.
