The Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Bündnis Sahnehmhalt (BSW) have reached an agreement in Saxony-Anhalt regarding the selection of the state parliament’s president and a vice-president. According to reports from the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio, both parties confirmed the understanding.
Amira Mohamed Ali, leader of BSW, confirmed the talks, adding that the AfD has now become the strongest political force in Saxony-Anhalt. She stated that, following established parliamentary customs, the AfD is entitled to field the president, and thus, the BSW would not object on principle.
Tobias Rausch, the parliamentary manager for the AfD group in Saxony-Anhalt, corroborated this statement to the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio. He noted that the BSW had already publicly stated its belief that the strongest political force should be allowed to nominate the parliament’s president. Rausch further added that the AfD would continue to support all individuals who support the AfD’s work within parliament.
AfD leader Tino Chrupalla also praised the cooperation with the BSW. Speaking to ARD, he described the nomination of the parliament president by the strongest faction as “a completely normal parliamentary custom.” He welcomed the BSW for implementing these parliamentary norms, noting that they are currently the only party to do so.
The ARD-Hauptstadtstudio reports that the AfD parliamentary group plans to decide on its candidate for the office of parliament president during its upcoming session on September 29.
