Berlin CDU Vows Legal Fight Against Proposed Non-German Voting Rights

Burkard Dregger, the CDU spokesperson for internal affairs in the Berlin House of Representatives, has announced that his party will launch legal resistance against the proposed foreign voting rights in Berlin. This proposal, outlined in a paper put forward by members of the Linke, Greens, and SPD parties, aims to grant communal and state-level voting rights to all individuals who have resided in Germany for five years, including non-EU foreigners.

Dregger told the news broadcaster “Welt” that granting such voting rights is clearly unconstitutional. He argued that the Basic Law explicitly mandates that all state authority originates from the people, adding that, according to German law, the public referred to as “the people” is specifically the German people, not any other group.

The CDU politician confirmed that his group will fight these legislative initiatives through the legal system all the way to the Constitutional Court, expressing full confidence that they will ultimately succeed in overturning the plan.
