Non-partisan Berlin Cultural Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson announced Friday that she is resigning from her post. The decision comes amid intense controversy regarding the allocation of state funding designated for anti-Semitism initiatives. Wedl-Wilson stated that she has formally requested her dismissal from Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU). The catalyst for the resignation is a recent internal review by the Berlin State Audit Office, which found the funding of several multi-million euro projects to be unlawful. Furthermore, the audit report heavily criticized the cultural department’s process, describing the entire allocation procedure as “arbitrary” and “clearly illegal”.
