Following the attack on the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin in February 2025, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against an alleged accomplice. The authority announced on Wednesday that the Syrian national is strongly suspected of aiding attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm. The indictment was formally submitted on August 21, 2026, before the State Protection Senate of the District Court in Berlin.
The man is accused of encouraging the primary perpetrator to assault and severely injure a man within the memorial grounds of the Holocaust victims in central Berlin. The victim, a Spanish tourist, sustained life-threatening injuries. Investigators determined that the crime was committed on the evening of February 21, 2025, fueled by radical-Islamist and antisemitic attitudes.
The perpetrator in the original incident was convicted on March 5, 2026, by the District Court in Berlin, receiving a 13-year prison sentence for attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm, although this verdict is not yet legally binding.
The newly charged suspect has been in pre-trial detention since May 27, 2026, based on an arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice. Investigations against him remain ongoing.
