The incident began late on Friday evening when a man took a woman hostage inside the supermarket on Hildburghauser Straße. The perpetrator reportedly threatened the woman with a large knife. The hostage-taking took place shortly before the store was closing.

Special police forces maintained contact with the hostage-taker while the area surrounding the supermarket was cordoned off extensively. Residents were permitted to leave their homes, though they were escorted by police if they needed to pass through the restricted zone.
