Sinan Selen, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), has cautiously commented on the preparations of the domestic intelligence service regarding the possibility of an AfD state government. Speaking to the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Tuesday, Selen stated, “I believe we must view the topic broadly. This is primarily a political consideration of questions regarding how resilient our system is in its decision-making processes overall.” Consequently, he stressed that the issue should not be reduced to a single specific aspect.
Separately, Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) commented on the situation in Berlin on Tuesday, emphasizing that no outcomes should be presumed prior to elections. Dobrindt stated that his interest lies in taking all necessary political steps to ensure a majority in a state parliament that excludes the AfD.
In another statement, Selen specifically addressed the new AfD youth organization, Generation Deutschland (GD). He noted that when comparing it to the previously dissolved Jungen Alternative (JA), he perceives “programmatic and personnel continuity,” from which he draws “corresponding conclusions.” It is noted that the Jungen Alternative had previously been filed in the intelligence service report as a suspected instance of right-extremism.
