CDU Member of Parliament Florian Oest is calling for an immediate special session of the Bundestag faction, a move that implicitly assumes the departure of the current faction leader, Jens Spahn. However, Oest made clear that simply installing a new faction leader will not solve the systemic issues.
The politician stated that the approval ratings for the Union are “disastrous.” Given that the party’s self-image is to create policy for the majority of people in Germany, he questioned whether the CDU can still be considered a major political party with approval ratings hovering around 20 percent. Consequently, after the special Bundestag faction meeting, Oest insists that an urgent conference of the CDU’s German district chairpersons must be convened to develop a comprehensive strategy for the next 24 months.
This internal political discussion was initially ignited by the announcement of Jens Spahn’s fatherhood. Reports suggest that Spahn and his partner utilized a surrogate mother abroad, despite Spahn previously campaigning in Germany to maintain a ban on that model of surrogacy.
