The selection of the new President of the State Parliament (Landtag) in Saxony-Anhalt saw the CDU faction defy the guidance issued by Minister-President and CDU faction leader Sven Schulze, who had recommended that they abstain. Despite the instruction, only five total abstentions were cast in the secret vote on Tuesday, even though the CDU faction represents 15 members. Tobias Rausch (AfD) was elected as the new State Parliament President, receiving 48 votes. This total gave him four more votes than the combined number of representatives from the AfD and BSW. It is worth noting that the BSW had previously announced its intention to also vote in favor of Rausch.
