Hesse’s SPD member of the Bundestag, Armand Zorn, has voiced criticism regarding the potential candidacy of Ines Claus, the CDU faction leader in the state parliament, for the position of Federal President. Zorn told the “Rheinische Post” that the office demands a personality capable of uniting the nation and representing Germany with dignity on the international stage during times of changing geopolitical circumstances. He emphasized that this requires significant experience, empathy, and the ability to connect with diverse people.
According to Zorn, Claus is not widely known across Germany. He contrasted her profile with that of Ilse Aigner (CSU), suggesting Aigner is an experienced figure with notable nationwide political recognition who meets these prerequisites. While he acknowledges that the Union retains the right to propose a candidate, Zorn stressed that the crucial factor is selecting someone who meets these high standards. Consequently, he stated he expects the Union to provide clarity on a suitable candidate in a timely manner.
