Consumers’ protection advocates are demanding targeted financial relief for households struggling with high energy prices, arguing against the implementation of another fuel tax reduction. Ramona Pop, board member of the Federal Association of Consumer Centers (VZBV), stressed in a recent interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Wednesday edition) that consumers have been facing rising costs across various areas for several months. She cautioned that focusing solely on easing gasoline prices would not be the solution; instead, the necessary step is providing targeted support for those who can barely afford current energy costs.
Furthermore, Pop urged the federal government to take a long-term and comprehensive view of the rising cost of living. According to her, the limited global supply of oil and gas could rapidly lead to further increases in the prices of food and heating. Therefore, she called for greater price transparency regarding foodstuffs and a robust, stable energy supply system.
Meanwhile, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had previously announced relief measures for drivers. Acknowledging that record prices for diesel and gasoline have reached an unbearable limit for many daily commuters, Merz stated on Tuesday, “I am of the opinion that we must act.” While the specific tools for intervention have yet to be determined, he assured the public that a proposal would be presented very soon, adding that the federal government is currently coordinating with the respective states.
