The day after the fatal drive-by shooting at the Berlin CSD, several hundred people gathered at the Marienkirche in the capital on Sunday for a vigil. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) was also in attendance and subsequently planned to visit the scene of the crime in the Tiergarten.
Shortly before the service, Merz spoke to the press. “We will do everything possible to catch the perpetrator as quickly as possible,” he stated. “We will consider the consequences and decide with prudence, but also with determination.” He stressed that these extremists have no place in the middle of our society. “And we will not allow this poison of terrorism and this poison against our freedom to continue spreading throughout our society,” the Chancellor said, declaring that they would defend the society’s freedom. He concluded: “We are more. We are stronger. And we stick together in our country.”
According to the latest information, the incident that occurred on Saturday involved a 21-year-old man, Abdul B., who allegedly drove into the Berlin Tiergarten around 10 p.m. using a small truck, where CSD participants were celebrating. Authorities report that a woman was killed, and a total of 29 people were injured in the attack.
